Finding Connections and Opportunities

If you have published or are thinking about publishing a Christian book, I encourage you to attend at least one trade show that the book industry hosts. These venues present wonderful opportunities to learn about the book industry and understand what is important in promoting and marketing a book, as well as provide you with a number of new opportunities.

  1. I have found the literary agency industry very frustrating as many of the main houses are totally closed to new, un-referred authors. With the vast majority of publishing houses not taking unsolicited manuscripts anymore, and with agents not looking at unsolicited queries… how DOES a new author stand any chance? It seems like the proverbial catch-22 no matter where one turns… Do you have any suggestions?


  2. Bethany, my answer to your dilemma is for you to look at and consider publishing with a small publisher. Small publishers come in two varieties: traditional royalty presses and self-publishing houses. Consider the traditional royalty presses that are small and accept manuscripts for consideration. I suggest you start by looking at the list on CSPA’s website of our member publishers accepting manuscripts at Be aware that this list contains both types of publishers.

  3. I will definitely look into that for sure. Thank you! One more question- the manuscript has recently been accepted by The Fedd Agency through their agent-assisted self-publishing services… do you have any thoughts on doing it this way versus standard self-publishing? It’s more out of pocket initially for me, but I feel like I’d get some invaluable industry education and insight.


  4. I am not familiar with the Fedd Agency. The bottom line is that any self-publishing service is making their money off of you publishing your book, not selling your book. Selling the book is the harder piece of the publishing puzzle and most self-publishing companies don’t provide much support in that area or, if they do, they charge you for the service.
