Promote Your Book as a Gift This Month

Procrastination. It’s a problem for a lot of people.


Did you know that there is even an organization for procrastinators? It’s called The Procrastinators Society. The Society has a creed for procrastinators. In part, the creed reads:

The Procrastinator’s Creed

  • I believe that if anything is worth doing, it would have been done already.
  • I shall never move quickly, except to avoid more work or find excuses.
  • I will never rush into a job without a lifetime of consideration.
  • I truly believe that all deadlines are unreasonable regardless of the amount of time given.
  • If at first I don’t succeed, there is always next year.
  • I will never put off until tomorrow, what I can forget about forever.

When it comes to Christmas shopping, many people procrastinate buying gifts until the last minute. A survey by PriceGrabber found that 41% of consumers shop for holiday gifts between December 21 and December 24 each year. One study found that 26 percent of these people admitted to procrastinating.

Promote your book as a gift.

This means that you still have time to promote your books as Christmas gifts and reap some holiday sales. In fact, experts estimate that 25% of books are purchased as gifts.

Spend this month capitalizing on those shoppers that procrastinate gift buying. Capture their attention to buy your book as a gift by offering one or all of the following enticements.

1. Free Shipping

Everyone loves free shipping. Some studies indicate that 58% of people purchase more items just to qualify for free shipping and 83% of people are willing to wait an extra 48-hours for delivery to get free shipping. Offer free shipping on book purchases for the holiday season.

2. Flash Sale

A flash sale is a special discount that lasts for a very short period of time. This type of sale creates a sense of urgency, helping your readers act now to buy a book. When offering a one- to three-day flash sale, include a countdown timer on your website. Make the countdown timer prominent to increase urgency, encouraging visitors to your site to buy.

3. Bundling

Offer gift bundles. You can offer your print and ebook together as a bundle. If you have authored more than one book, then bundle two or three of your books together and offer these for sale for the holidays. You can also bundle your book with a gift card or other item to entice Christmas shoppers to buy the bundle as a gift.

Studies show that many last-minute shoppers are hunting for bargains. In fact, 43 percent of last-minute shoppers said that they believe the best discounts can be found during this time period. So, offer an irresistible bargain on your books this month and grab some Christmas sales.

Christmas gift shopping is big business. The average American spends around $700 on holiday gifts and goodies. According to the National Retail Federation, U.S. holiday sales account for about 20% of all retail sales each year.

As a small publisher or independent author, you can cash in on this gift buying trend to sell more books. By promoting your books as a great Christmas gift idea, you can sell more books.

Many people start Christmas shopping early in the fall, so now is a great time to begin promoting your books as gifts. Here are six ways to capitalize on Christmas gift shopping to sell more books.

1. Position Your Book as a Great Gift

Let your fans know that your book makes a great gift. Feature it as a gift idea on your website, in your newsletter or email updates to your fans, and on your social media posts. Your readers may not automatically think of your book as a gift. You can plant and water this idea for your followers.

Let your readers and fans know that they can give your book as either a print book or a digital book as a gift. Amazon Kindle now allows anyone gift a Kindle book through their new “Buy for Others” feature.

When promoting your book as a gift on social media, be sure to use hashtags related to Christmas and gifts to make sure your posts have wide visibility. A few of these hashtags include:


2. Offer a Special Christmas Discount

One way to make your book more appealing as a gift is to offer shoppers a special Christmas discount. You can offer a two-for-one deal, free shipping, or even just a special holiday price. Be sure to make your Christmas special or discount time limited to give shoppers a sense of urgency so that they will act on your prompting to purchase your book as a gift with your holiday discount.

3. Create a Bundle for Gift Giving

Many people don’t like to spend a lot of time Christmas shopping. For these individuals, the easier you make shopping for them, the more likely they will buy. One way to make shopping easy for people is to offer a gift bundle. Then instead of having to buy a book from you and then heading over to another store to purchase another gift, you can make it easy by offering a bundle that provides one-stop shopping for your customer.

You can pair your book with another product as a bundle. For example, if your book is about Godliness for young ladies, offer a bundle consisting of your book and a piece of Christian jewelry. If you have a devotional that focuses on men, offer a gift card to Home Depot along with your book. Your gift bundle can be as creative as you allow it to be.

4. Create a Gift Guide for Your Fans

Some people find gift buying tedious and overwhelming. They feel that they lack good ideas about what to buy their loved ones. You can help these individuals by offering a Gift Guide on your website or blog. Feature a number of products that make good gifts for your target audience. Of course, include your book in your guide. Remember, the goal is to provide information that your followers will find helpful.

5. Display Your Books at Local Christmas Craft Bazaars or Holiday Festivals

Every community has Christmas craft bazaars and holiday-themed festivals where local residents can rent a table or booth and showcase their goods a gifts. You can sign up and display your book at these events to promote your book as a gift and garner some sales.

6. Advertise in Holiday Shopping Guides

Numerous magazines, journals, websites, and blogs feature holiday shopping guides. Some require you to pay to advertise your book as a great gift. Others are put on by bloggers where the blog will feature your product as a gift in exchange for a free copy of your book to the blogger. You can pitch bloggers that feature gift guides to ask if they would be willing to include your book or bundle in their guide.

Are You Promoting Books as Gifts?

In my last post, I gave three solid reasons why anyone involved in the publishing industry should give books as gifts. I hope you were convinced.

If you are purchasing books as gifts this holiday, then I think you should also promote the idea so other people consider giving books as gifts.

Here’s why:

1. It’s good for business.

Yes, I know I said this before, but it’s true. If you purchase books for gifts and promote it so other people consider doing the same, then more books will be purchased. This is good for business.

2. It increases consumer awareness.

Many people may not have considered giving books as gifts. If you plant the idea in their minds, it can take root and grow.

I give books as gifts to all my friends for special occasions. I recently had a friend tell me that she so loved the book I gave her for her birthday this summer that she is going to give the book to all her friends for Christmas. Score one up for books!

A group of bloggers has made it easy for you to promote the fact that you are giving books as gifts this holiday season. Do You Give Books as Gifts?

I think that anyone involved in the publishing industry, whether you are an author, publisher, distributor, bookseller, editor, publicist, or literary agent, should give books as gifts.


1. It’s good for business.

Giving books as gifts means more books are being purchased. This is good for business. We need books to sell to keep the business of publishing and selling books alive and active. The more people you expose to a good book, the more people you win as enthusiastic fans who will help you promote that book, resulting in more book sales.

2. It promotes reading.

According to statistics, reading is decreasing in the United States. Giving books as gifts encourages people to read. The more people read, the more books they purchase. It’s simple math.

3. Books have the power to change lives.

Ultimately, only Jesus has the power to transform lives, but books still have the power to change people’s lives. Books provide people with insight and information that can help them learn to think and act in new ways. Most importantly, good Christian books can lead people to a better understanding and relationship with God.

I encourage you to give books as gifts this Christmas season and throughout the year. Books make wonderful gifts and last a long time.
