Content Marketing Ideas for Authors

Content marketing is all the rage. Content marketing is a long-term strategy for building relationships with customers and potential customers by giving them something valuable for free.

Authors who create content around their books and offer this content free in their email newsletters, on their websites and blogs, and on social media can gain trust with an audience. Trust leads to more sales. Remember, people do business with those they trust.

Creating content can be time consuming. Some authors complain that create content takes away from the time they have to write more books.

Enter content curation. Content curation is the act of collecting, assembling, and presenting content that relates to your books. With content curation, instead of creating all the content they share, authors can share content that others have created that relates to their topic.

There are a number of services online that will help you collect and curate content for free or a small fee. These include:

  • Pocket: Pocket is a great place to capture and store the content that comes your way. You can store images, videos, and articles in Pocket for later reference when creating a curation of content to share with your readers.
  • allows you to research and publish content through its curation tool.
  • Feedly: Feedly allows you to aggregate content by storing the information from your favorite sources all in one place.

An interesting and different idea of content curation for fiction authors recently crossed my path. I found the idea intriguing and creative.

Content curation does not just have to just be articles, memes, or videos. Content curation can also apply to lists. You can share lists with your readers. These lists don’t just have to be a list that the author recommends, they can be a list one of the characters in your book might have.

For example, you can have your characters create some lists. These could include:

  • A list of song that your protagonist would have on his Spotify playlist.
  • A list of books that your protagonist would have on her bookshelf.
  • A list of favorite recipes from one of your main characters.
  • A list of relationship tips from one of your book’s characters.

You can then share these lists with your readers on your website, in your emails, as a Pinterest board, and on your social media sites. Get creative.

Content marketing does not just have to be the material you create. You can share material others create. When sharing curated content, be sure to give credit to the author and include a link to where the author originally posted the material.

How to Stand Out from the Crowd

Do you remember these puzzles from your childhood (or maybe your kids’ childhood)? Which one is different?

Standing out from the crowd is important. With over one million self-published books produced every year, how do you stand out from the crowd?

The answer lies is not in drawing attention to yourself by standing out in an odd or strange way as in the above puzzle. Instead, you want to stand out in ways that are attractive and draw people to you and your book.

It’s not just your book that must stand out. Your marketing efforts also need to stand out in the crowd to attract attention.

After you have written a compelling book that is professionally edited and designed, your next step is to ensure that your marketing activities don’t just mimic what others are doing, but stand out from the crowd.

You can stand out from the crowd with the following three strategies:

1. Informative and Unique Content

Give away free content that ties into the theme of your book. This free content must also be unique and answer important questions or solve important problems your target audience faces. Share this content on your blog and in your social media posts. Offer some content in downloadable format for interested readers to receive in exchange for their email address. This helps build your email marketing database.

 2. Connect with Your Audience

Connection is about caring. We connect with others when we care about them. Care for your audience. Show up where these people hang out—be that on social media or in person. Talk to them. Rejoice when they rejoice, mourn when they mourn. Support their efforts and cheer them on. Most people crave authentic connection. Your audience will begin to trust you when they see that you are authentic.

3. Be Consistent

Many Indie authors start strong, but soon fizzle out. When results don’t roll in the way these authors expect, they turn their attention elsewhere. It takes at least a year to build a strong, loyal following. To stand out, you must show up consistently and add value to people’s lives.

In marketing and selling books, you want to be noticed in a good way, not because of appearing odd or strange. Show up, connect with your audience, and offer them great content. Stand out for the value you bring to people’s lives.

Proof! Author Platform Building Works

Do you have a moment? There is something I need to tell you.

Thus began the conversation I had with an attendee at the recent Greater Philadelphia Christian Writers Conference where I was teaching. The conferee speaking to me had attended another writers conference I had taught at earlier this year. At that conference, I had taught principles from my MCB University’s on-demand seminars Develop an Audience for Your Books and Grow Your Audience with Content Marketing.

This conferee told me that at the conference earlier this year, I had given her two simple steps to follow to begin to build her author platform. I told her to write a blog post once a week and share it on social media. She reported that she had followed this advice and now she was on week 19.

I asked her if anyone was reading her blog posts. She replied that her friends were reading, commenting, and sharing her posts. I replied that this was a great start.

This conferee went on to tell me that a magazine had contacted her and asked if they could reprint one of her blog posts in their publication. She was delighted to give them permission.

Then an organization contacted her and asked her to come speak on her topic. She thought they would want to interview her on the phone when she contacted them, but they simply proceeded to set her up with not one speaking opportunity, but five. She shared with me that she assumed that her blog posts and website made them decide without an interview.

I was thrilled for this emerging author. Even before she has published her first book, she is getting published in a magazine and has received speaking engagements—without even seeking these opportunities out—all from building her platform through blogging and sharing what she has blogged.

I share this because it is encouraging feedback and it gives other authors hope. If you are writing about things that resonate with your audience and provide hope, people will respond. The efforts you put into building and maintaining your author platform will pay off.
