I am always on the lookout for unique, out-of-the-box marketing ideas. The other day, I came across one that I thought I would share with you.

Smartphone and tablet usage continues to rise. Here are a couple statistics:

  • About 20% of U.S. adults own a tablet.
  • 35% of U.S. adults own a smartphone.

Go Away. I’m Reading.

Have you ever been interrupted when reading a book? Have you ever wished you had a sign that said “Go Away. I’m Reading”.

If so, you are not alone.

Three book lovers, Erin Bowman, Sarah Enni, and Traci Neithercott, thought that having a way to silently warm everyone at the coffee shop that Reading Time ≠ Social Time was what they needed.

The three created simple but inspiring dust jackets for print books. These dust jackets have various statements to tell others that you do not want to be disturbed.

My favorites are:

Marketing Outside the Box

Thinking outside the box means coming up with creative ways to do something. It is looking at the normal way of doing things and all the assumptions that people make and asking, “How can I do things differently?”

In book marketing, thinking outside the box can really pay off. Doing something that other authors and main-stream publishers are not doing can draw attention to an author and her book.

One self-published author, Steven Cohn, went way outside the box to market and sell his book. Watch this video and see what his creative thinking accomplished for him.

After watching, take some inspiration from Steven and brainstorm ways that you can market your books “outside the box.”
